Looking after your Bamboo Chopping Board top

Bamboo is becoming hugely popular for making chopping boards, kitchen utensils and accessories as one of the toughest and most eco-friendly materials out there – which is exactly why we chose it for our drink coolers.

Not only are bamboo chopping boards more resistant to damage, but they last longer than wooden or plastic chopping boards, are lightweight, offer a smoother finish and are known to be safer and more hygienic for their mild anti-septic properties.

The best part? They are easy to maintain because they don’t absorb odours or liquids, making them very functional when it comes to preparing meals inside or outside.

If you’re wondering how to clean your bamboo chopping board to keep it in tip top condition, we’re here to show you!

Cleaning

After you’ve finished chopping your meat or vegetables, scrap any leftover food with a spatula and clean immediately with a damp cloth. Remember, bamboo is sensitive to heat and moisture, and should never stay wet for longer than necessary as this can eventually lead to mould, cracks and warp the shape of your chopping board.

Once done, dry thoroughly with a clean dishcloth and allow it to air dry for a couple of hours – have a cheeky glass of wine or champagne whilst you wait!

To keep it looking shiny and new, another tip is to re-oil it with good grade oil like mineral oil, olive or worktop. Beeswax is another product you can use to hydrate your chopping board too! We recommend re-oiling twice a year.

Stains

For tackling those stubborn stains, never use harsh cleaning agents – unless you want any nasty toxic chemicals being absorbed or drying out your board!

Simply sprinkle baking soda or squeeze lemon juice over the area, rub using a damp cloth, then allow to sit for a few minutes before wiping with a dry kitchen towel to remove stains and have your bamboo chopping board smelling fresh and clean.

Disinfecting

Hygiene is an important factor to consider when it comes to handling raw meats, seafood and other foods as you cook. Just like a wooden or plastic board, your bamboo one needs to be sanitised regularly to avoid cross-contamination and infection.

White vinegar naturally cleanses as a result of its anti-bacterial features and won’t irritate the bamboo in any way.

Restoration

If your bamboo board feels dry, use a fine sheet of sandpaper to lightly re-sand the surface. At the end, wash the chopping board with warm, soapy water, leave until completely dry and then re-coat with oil.

So, follow these simple steps to care for and clean your bamboo chopping board. If you decide to buy one of our coolers, we also sell the chopping boards separately if you wanted a complete refresh in a few years.
